I suspect it is melted snow creating crevasses but I would dearly love it to be something exotic. This discovery in Antarctica has been described as a giant’s staircase, the stairs of a buried temple or pyramid from Atlantis, or my favourite, the bars of the cage that God put Satan in. Some anomaliesīelow is a list of anomalies found in Antarctica that you can look at yourself on Google Maps or Google Earth: Till then I’ll keep an open mind but won’t necessarily jump to the conclusion that any new find is proof of a buried civilisation, alien visitations or secret bases. So I am hoping that one day someone has the resources to actually investigate some of these anomalies and report back.

The short summer season, changeable weather conditions and access to transport make these anomalies difficult to investigate (if the scientists down there could be bothered in the first place)Ĭontrary to popular belief no-one stops you from going to Antarctica as long as you inform one of the Antarctic Treaty member governments about what you are doing there and satisfy them that you will abide by the environmental protocols, and have insurance in case you need to be rescued. The problem with Antarctica is that resources are limited and certain aspects of science are prioritised. Having said that I still think that if you are serious about science then you have to keep an open mind and be willing to investigate things that are unusual. Now I’m not saying that they are wrong and I would absolutely love to find an Alien spaceship in Antarctica or the remains of Atlantis but there are usually more probable and simpler explanations. The trouble is that when enthusiasts find an anomaly they don’t always look for the simplest explanation but tend to leap to grand conclusions like crashed spaceships, secret bases, ancient pyramids or and lost civilisations Google is great for this because they have basically photographed the planet. It seems that there are a lot of enthusiasts who scour Google Earth looking for anomalies (an anomaly is something that deviates from what is standard, normal, or expected). Sparavigna discusses her theory in a scientific paper posted online on Jan. These pesky critters can create nesting mounds spanning some 47 inches (120 centimeters) across and are typically surrounded by bare ground up to 108 square feet (10 square meters), according to physicist Amelia Carolina Sparavigna, a specialist in image processing and satellite imagery analysis at the Politecnico of Torino in Ital. Turns out, the desert around the Grand Canyon is home to red harvester ants (Pogonomyrmex barbatus). This weird polka-dot pattern in the vegetation near a volcano on the rim of the Grand Canyon could be the work of red harvester ants.

The site was once equipped with missiles in the open air, with embankments between paired launch sites. Here, one of those sites, the Oahu Defense Area in Hawaii, is shown in 1968. His plan is to build a geo-referenced database so that anyone can research the Nike missile sites through Google Earth. Those missiles became obsolete with the advent of long-range intercontinental ballistic missiles (opens in new tab) (ICBMs).ĭavid Tewksbury, a GIS (geographic information system) specialist at Hamilton College in New York, aimed to preserve a visual record of the abandoned Nike missile launch sites before they vanish - either as a result of being reclaimed by nature, repurposed by the military or redeveloped. Some of those missiles even carried nuclear warheads. Nike missiles, which were supersonic surface-to-air missiles, sat ready to launch at nearly 300 sites across the United States during a period of the Cold War, from 1954 to the 1970s.
